Just seven years after Mercedes-Benz released the gorgeous CLS that created a new segment of four-door coupes, BMW finally has a competitor for the CLS. The 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe will be built on the 6-series architecture and will have the swoopy good looks of the 6-Series along with the size and comfort for rear seat passengers of the 5-Series.
The 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Sport will launch in the U.S. with the 640i, which will have a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 315-hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Soon to follow will be the 650i Gran Coupe, which will use a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with 445-hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Expect both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive to be optional on the 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Sport, just like most of BMW’s lineup.
The 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Sport will be 4.4 inches longer than the 6-Series Coupe. BMW claims that the extra four inches give the Gran Sport a 4+1 seating capacity, meaning that you really have four comfortable seats with an extra belt in a pinch.
On its own, the BMW Gran Sport is beautiful, but the comparison with the CLS is inevitable and honestly, to me, the BMW comes up short. Maybe it’s the fact that the styling is based on the 6-Series, which makes the Gran Sport seem less special than the CLS, which doesn’t look like a longer version of any other Mercedes car. Or maybe it’s the fact that the wow factor from seven years ago still hasn’t worn off and that makes the CLS so appealing. Either way, BMW might have a great car in the Gran Sport, but it just doesn’t seem as special as the CLS.
