VW’s U.S. lineup update says the big usable changes are familiar ones shoppers actually notice: up to 291 miles of EPA-estimated range for the ID.4 Pro RWD, 282 horsepower in rear-drive form, 335 horsepower with AWD, and a standard 12.9-inch infotainment screen instead of the old “maybe the software will grow on you” routine. The buyer’s sweet spot still looks like the Pro RWD, not the pricier AWD versions that pile on power most normal commuters will barely use. At a starting MSRP of $45,095, the ID.4 is not exactly bargain-bin cheap, so the trim that gives you the best range without inflating the monthly payment is the one worth pricing first. If your real life is school runs, errands, and the occasional highway trip, 291 miles and rear-drive efficiency are usually more useful than winning a stoplight argument once a month.

What helps the ID.4 more than the horsepower bump is that VW finally cleaned up some of the ownership annoyances. The bigger touchscreen, wireless phone integration, and two-year Electrify America Pass+ membership with Plug&Charge make this thing easier to live with, which honestly matters more than another dramatic spec-sheet flex. That means the 2026 ID.4 makes the most sense for shoppers who care more about a roomy cabin, a quieter daily driver, and straightforward EV range than about chasing the loudest numbers in the class. Just do not shop it in a vacuum. If local deals are strong, an Equinox EV, Ioniq 5, or Model Y can still make the VW’s starting price feel a little optimistic. But if you always liked the ID.4 except for the old interface and middling specs, this version is a much more believable reason to circle back.
