If you are shopping for a used Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Gladiator right now, this is not one of those sleepy little recalls you shrug off and “handle later.” In NHTSA’s urgent park-outside warning, 1,076,999 model-year 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators are being recalled because wiring tied to the electric hydraulic power steering pump can overheat and cause a fire. The ugly part is that the fire risk can exist even when the vehicle is parked and turned off, which is a pretty good way to ruin the whole rugged-adventure vibe.

The shopper takeaway is simple: this hits the exact used-Jeep age range that a lot of people are cross-shopping right now. According to NHTSA, the agency is aware of 51 fires and one injury potentially tied to the issue, and owner letters are expected to start going out on Wed Jul 9. Cars.com’s recall coverage also notes that owners have been told to park outside and away from structures until repairs are completed. That is not the kind of language you ignore because the paint looks great and the seller added beadlocks.

If you are serious about buying one, run the VIN first on the official NHTSA recall lookup and the Mopar recall site. If the seller hasn’t checked or starts doing the usual “it’s probably nothing” routine, that should absolutely change the conversation. At minimum, it’s leverage. In some cases, it’s a reason to wait. There’s no bargain so good that parking your new-to-you Jeep outside from day one suddenly feels normal.

This also matters for buyers thinking about wheels, tires, lift kits, or replacement suspension parts right after purchase. Fine. Have fun with the build. But make sure the truck or SUV is recall-clean first, because a cool stance does not cancel out an active fire warning. On used Wrangler and Gladiator deals, this recall should now be part of the inspection checklist right alongside rust, axle seals, and whether the previous owner thought “off-roaded once” was a legally binding statement.
