Subaru’s latest 2026 Forester update matters for a pretty simple reason: the regular gas model just got a middle trim that looks a lot less anonymous. In Subaru’s official pricing update, the new Forester Sport Onyx Edition starts at $36,495 and adds the kind of stuff buyers actually notice in a parking lot and on a daily commute, including 19-inch dark wheels, dark gray badging, StarTex interior trim, and a Harman Kardon audio system. That is a much more useful upgrade path than the usual compact-SUV trick of making you pay luxury money just to stop the vehicle from looking basic.

The bigger point is that the normal Forester still does the boring, important stuff well. Subaru says the gas model keeps its 2.5-liter BOXER engine with 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, along with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and up to 33 mpg. If you are cross-shopping the new hybrid version, that matters because not every buyer needs the added cost and complexity. A lower buy-in and a familiar powertrain still count for something, especially in a market where monthly payments already feel rude.

It also helps that the Forester still leans hard into practicality instead of pretending to be a sport sedan in hiking boots. Subaru says the gas model offers up to 74.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is the kind of number families, dog owners, and weekend hardware-store regulars will actually use. That makes the new Sport Onyx Edition look like the trim to start with if you want a Forester that feels a little sharper and better equipped without drifting into full-on loaded-trim pricing.

If your whole mission is squeezing out the best fuel economy, the hybrid is still the obvious comparison to make. But if you just want a roomy AWD compact SUV that stays fairly sane on price and skips the gimmicks, the regular 2026 Forester still looks like the calmer, probably smarter buy. Sometimes the best new-car news is that a familiar one has not lost its mind.
