Toyota’s new C-HR BEV is a lot more interesting than its recycled name suggests. In Toyota’s own 2026 C-HR BEV announcement, the compact electric crossover shows up with a $37,000 starting price for the SE, standard all-wheel drive, 338 horsepower, and up to 287 miles of EPA-estimated range. That is the kind of spec sheet that gets real shoppers to pause, because a lot of compact EVs will give you decent range or a little punch, but not always both without climbing higher on the price ladder.
The bigger story is that Toyota finally built an EV that sounds aimed at people who want something less appliance-like. A claimed 0–60 time of 4.9 seconds is quick enough to matter in normal driving, and the NACS charge port is arguably the most useful upgrade here because it makes public charging less of a scavenger hunt. Toyota also says the 74.7-kWh battery can go from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes under ideal conditions, which is the kind of detail buyers actually care about when they are deciding whether an EV can handle weekend errands, road trips, or a longer commute without drama.
The trim strategy also looks refreshingly simple. The SE on 18-inch wheels is probably the smart buy because it keeps the full 287-mile headline range, while the XSE on 20-inch wheels drops to 273 miles. That is not a disaster, but it is a very normal example of style nibbling away at efficiency. Buyers who always start with a trim comparison before signing anything should pay attention to wheel size, ride comfort, and whether the sportier look is really worth the range hit and the likely payment bump.
Toyota’s updated bZ still looks like the better fit for shoppers who want to squeeze out the most range, but the C-HR BEV feels like the more interesting choice for people who want a compact EV that does not drive or look like a compromise. Cargo space is decent, the standard feature list is solid, and the pricing is at least pointed in the right direction. If dealer markups stay out of the way, this looks like one of the more sensible compact electric SUVs to keep on a short test-drive list.
