Subaru finally has a three-row EV that looks aimed at normal families instead of brand loyalists willing to excuse everything. On the official 2027 Subaru Getaway page, Subaru says the new SUV will offer 420 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, more than 300 miles of range, and access to 25,000+ Tesla Superchargers, with a 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes. That matters because the three-row EV market is still small, expensive, and full of vehicles that force you to choose between space, range, and brand trust. The practical stuff is what makes this launch worth watching. Subaru says the Getaway can seat six or seven passengers, offers up to 80.6 cubic feet of cargo space, and comes with a big 14-inch infotainment screen plus standard EyeSight driver-assist tech.
In other words, this isn’t some science-project EV with a tiny third row and a giant personality problem. It’s Subaru trying to build a family hauler that can handle school runs during the week and a loaded road trip without everybody arguing by mile 40. The catch is price. Subaru has not announced it yet, but Car and Driver’s early estimate puts the Getaway somewhere around $55,000 to $65,000. That’s exactly where shoppers start cross-shopping hard against the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, and where trim choices matter more than marketing fluff. A clean trim-comparison guide will probably be more useful here than chasing the fanciest badge, because many family buyers just need strong range, decent charging, and second-row comfort that doesn’t feel like a punishment.
My early take: the Getaway looks promising if you want Subaru familiarity in a big electric SUV, but it still needs a smart price to become a real buy recommendation. The horsepower and charging story are good, but shoppers should also watch towing limits, wheel-and-tire choices, and how the chassis feels with a full load before getting hypnotized by the spec sheet. Big family SUVs live or die by comfort, ride control, and whether they still feel calm when full of people and gear.
