General Motors is one of the first American car companies to dabble with direct injection technology. Their 260hp Ecotec 2.0-liter turbo that powers the Soltice GXP and Cobalt SS is a great engine and proved that the General knew how to get DI technology right the first time around.

Now the company is expanding their engine range by offering two all-new engines. Both feature direct injection technology as well as all General Motor’s current engine know-how.  By allowing the engine to run more efficiently, and making more power from less displacement, direct injection has many benefits to a naturally aspirated engine.

First up is GM’s new Ecotec DI four-cylinder. This particular engine has a displacement of 2.4-liters and makes 180hp and 172ft-lbs of torque. Next up is the new 3.0-liter V6 which borrows heavily from its 3.6-liter brother currently found in the Cadillac CTS. Rated at 255hp and 214ft-lbs of torque, this will make a perfect mid-level powerplant for many of GM’s models.

Look for these new engines to start trickling down the lineup starting this year. First up will be Cadillac and Buick models, then they will start reaching regular GM vehicles. Though more costly to produce, and more complicated to run, direct injection’s benefits far outweigh its negatives.
