There is an unexplained paradox in the world of cars. It seems the only people who can afford to drive six-figure supercars can’t really drive all that well. Just cause you can have a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, well it doesn’t mean you can handle one.

We have once again been reminded of this by a recent occurrence in California. A Lamborghini owner decided to take his car for a spin on the L.A. freeway at almost three times the posted speed limit. The car he was driving was the highly capable Lamborghini Murcielago, a V12 supercar capable of speeds in excess of 200mph.

The car’s driver lost control of the vehicle and proceeded to crash through a guardrail and fall over the side of the freeway into a parking structure where it burst into flames, local media reported. The driver was reported dead at the scene of the accident. The crash was so severe it took six hours for workers to clear the completely burned-out wreckage from the scene, closing the freeway until about 8:45 a.m., according to the local newspapers.

It seems to be a reoccurring theme with these cars. When the first Porsche 911 Turbos hit the streets in the 1970’s they were so fierce and demanding to drive it wasn’t long before people started wrecking them everywhere. In fact it was such a regular thing back then that they were nicknamed “Doctor Killers” by local Porsche salesmen. When asked why one salesman is famously quoted as saying, “just cause they can afford them, doesn’t mean they can drive them!”
