There are news reports coming from Japan that say Toyota’s newest upcoming Prius will be equipped with solar panels on it’s roof to help power the car’s climate control system. The system will reportedly be offered as an option on upscale versions of the new Prius.
The solar panels it would use would be sourced from Kyocera and would provide up to 5 kilowatts of electricity from each panel. Though they would be efficient enough to power the car’s lighting or electrics system, it will act more as a booster for the car’s own electric motor.
Whether or not the system will actually materialize in the production car remains to be seen, but sources close to the company say it will. Hopefully it won’t cost too much more over the base price of the vehicle. As soon as we have more news on this we will post it here on PriceWheels.com.
