The Kia Spectra has never really been a car to set hearts afire. But nonetheless it sold well for the fledging Korean manufacture due to it’s cheap price and great powertrain warranty. Still, it never materialized as a Civic or Corolla fighter from Korea. It was always a bit short of the mark.
This new version though, shows Kia is serious about competing in this market. The trend for more fuel efficient cars is on the rise and Kia needs this boost. While it’s called the Forte everywhere else in the world, once it’s here, it will be badged as a Spectra.
From the pictures we can see Kia’s new design language. Crisp and bold, with just enough soft lines so it doesn’t come off as a bit origami. The new car was penned by former Audi Design boss Peter Schreyer, and it shows. Chunky fenders and a purposeful stance are immediately apparent.
When the car debuts in the Korean market in August it will be powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. Whether that engine will make it to the U.S. remain to be seen. We’ll probably get a larger displacement engine, at least as an option. U.S. market release dates and pricing have not yet been announced.
