Volkswagen has recently announced pricing on the long awaited Jetta SportWagen. The SportWagen is a, you guessed it, wagon version of the companies best selling Jetta sedan. The cars are due to begin arriving at VW dealers this summer with a choice of three engines.
The gasoline power plants include a 2.5-liter five-cylinder rated at 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque on the Jetta SportWagen S and SE variants, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 200 hp and 207 lb-ft on the Jetta SportWagen SEL. The fuel-miser diesel is a 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder rated at 140 hp and 236 lb-ft while offering over 40mpg on the highway! VW will offer a five-speed manual gearbox on the base SportWagen S 2.5 and a six-speed manual on the SportWagen SE, SEL and TDI models. A six-speed Tiptronic automatic is available on the five-cylinder, while the turbo four-cylinder gas and diesel will offer a six-speed DSG dual-clutch box.
The company’s own Web site says the Jetta SportWagen S will start at $19,649, including a $650 shipping charge, while the SE will be priced from $21,999. The turbocharged SEL is priced from $26,640 for the six-speed manual and $27,740 for the six-speed DSG.
Seems like a good price for a well equipped sport wagon in the best of German traditions. Head on over to your local V-Dub dealer to see one up close. It beats an SUV for practicality any day.
