The cars are forever tied with the notion of speed. Bred in a mythical land where speed limits do not exist and where master craftsmen reside. Cars so impressive that they are forever compared and contrasted and rarely bettered. I’m talking, of course, about Porsche.
Someone once told me that Ferrari’s are for emotional people that like to go fast, and Porsche’s are for rational people that like to go fast. Makes sense to me. A Porsche provides reliable, everyday performance. You could drive one to the track, run some laps, then leave and pick up some milk on the way home. That’s the way it’s always been with Porsche. It’s been like that for 60 years now.
60 years. That’s a long time to be a such a high level, but this year marks Porsche’s 60th anniversary as a high performance automobile manufacture. It all started with a dream. A desire for a car that did not yet exist. According to the official company history, Ferry Porsche recalled: “It all started when I began looking around and just could not find my dream car. So I decided to build it myself.” This led to the first Porsche, the 356. It received official type approval and homologation on June 8, 1948 and Porsche then set out to do what would become the companies main calling, racing.
Today Porsche is the one of the most profitable car companies in the world. In fact, they make more money per car than any other manufacture on earth. All this from one man’s desire for a perfect car. Nowadays they are known for just that, making perfect sports cars.
And an ever rapidly approaching future, who knows what the boys in Germany have in store for the next 60 years….
