Though it’s that LS-powered V8 that will steal the show when the Camaro come out, the real news for GM insiders is the muscle cars upcoming V6. Though it will be the base engine in the Camaro the V6 is going to account for most of Camaro sales.
“Everyone thinks we’ll be positioning the Camaro as a burn-ass hot rod,” said Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of sales and marketing. “But that’s only about 30 percent of the business. The other two-thirds will come from 27-mpg V6 sales, with a significant female share.” LaNeve also said that GM is “not operating under the assumption that fuel prices will go down,” and that Chevrolet is “looking at plans for a four-cylinder” for the Camaro, “but we don’t have it done yet.”
Consideration of small engines won’t end with the new Camaro either. LaNeve said that due to consumer demand and CAFE concerns, “We are looking at everything to improve fuel mileage. Cars that use primarily 8s we are looking at getting 6s in them. Cars that use primarily 6s, we are looking at getting 4s in them.”
Though the Camaro is known for it’s big, brute, V8 power, it is nice to see that GM are at least looking into the future and seeing that trends are gonna demand less fuel consumption. The Camaro can have a four cylinder in my book, so long as it makes at least 200hp. That’s just my opinion, but I doubt GM is willing to re-live the 70’s with it’s sub-par performing V8’s and muscle cars with little power. 150hp?! Where is the muscle in that?!
